Golden Vs. Brown Flaxseed

Golden Flaxseed vs. Brown Flaxseed

So what is the difference between Golden flaxseed and brown flaxseed?

Well, as it turns out,  it mostly has to do with the taste. Of course we have a preference here for the taste of golden flaxseed, but we’ll let you be the judge!

Brown Flaxseed
As you might guess, brown flaxseed is brown in color. The seeds have a length of about 3/16″. When added to food, brown flaxseed ads a crunchy texture to your food, and compared to golden flaxseed, they have a bolder and more ‘toasty’ taste.

Rich in antioxidants and Omega-3 fatty acids, brown flaxseeds are 38% fat, 28% carbohydrates and 24.5% protein. In fact, brown flaxseed has a higher antioxidant content than golden seeds. Generally, brown flaxseed is more common, and more wildly available.

Golden Flaxseed
Golden or yellow in color, the primary difference with golden flaxseed is the light, buttery flavor, and compared to brown flaxseed, most people find golden flaxseed to be sweeter in taste. Depending on what you are adding it to, golden flaxseed can make or break your cooking.

Golden flaxseeds are 37% fat, 30% carbohydrates, and 23% protein.

Golden flaxseed also has less monounsaturated fatty acids and more polyunsaturated fatty acids than its brown relative.

While the taste difference between golden and brown flaxseed is important to those with highly sensitive palettes, it’s important to note that the nutritional difference between the two is negligible.
